As you are well aware, there is a desperate need for the City of
Greater Sudbury to go forward with the proposed Barrydowne extension.
One of the benefits of constructing this new access route to/from the
city is related directly to our commitment to lower our environmental
footprint. The amount of greenhouse gasses being emitted into the
atmosphere due to high volumes of automobile traffic travelling along
R80 is increasing on a daily basis. New housing, industry, commercial
development and mining exploration in the Valley and Capreol are putting
more pressure on our existing roadways. Bottlenecks in traffic at our
major intersections, and vehicles sitting idling for extended periods of
time are having a negative impact on our environment. There is also the
fact that the total distance needed to travel from Capreol/Hanmer to New
Sudbury would be reduced by almost half if the Barrydowne extension were
to be constructed. This would again reduce gasoline consumption and
provide a further reduction in emissions Please consider the following:

- Funds from the Federal Government under the "environmental" umbrella
may be directed to the planning and construction of this transportation
route,

- FedNor should have a direct roll to play, due to the increased
opportunity for economic development in this area (transportation of
goods and supplies are major contributors),

- The province's decision to amalgamate the outlying townships into the
City of Greater Sudbury must also take into account the physical linking
of this entity with proper transportation routes,

- The cost of such a project would be recouped through the increase in
tax revenues as a direct result of new development in this area.

I ask that you support your constituents by bringing this issue to the
forefront at every available opportunity and make your support for this
project known publicly.
Thank-you for your ongoing service,
Neil Martin

This would eliviate the traffic congestion on Lasalle Blvd. and at
Lasalle and Hwy 69 North intersection. The traffic to the Valley would
still be at maximum capacity beggining from the Tracks and Wheels area
to the Valley. The Greater City of Sudbury must have record of the
municipality population assessments. This would surely indicate the
increase of population in the last ten years. You can be sure that the
population will also increase in the next ten years with all the housing
projects. The Greater City of Sudbury are also aware of the present and
future Housing Subdivisions, future condominiums and future row housings
being built.
There's no doubt in my mind that the Valley & surrounding areas
including Capreol need this extension. For the sake of 10 KM this road
construction should definitely commence as soon as possible.

As a resident of Greater Sudbury and living in the City of Sudbury, in the Donovan area of Sudbury Ontario. I have always thought of this project as something that should become a reality...not only for safety reasons, but for the issue of traffic. I run a delivery Business and the amount of traffic along Highway 69 N, and Notre Dame & Lasalle...it is not effecient for me to do deliveries to the valley area residents who have occasionally asked for our services.

It would be helpfull that if all traffic on our roads to be addressed, however the majority of traffic jams are caused from people who do resides in the outlying areas specifically Valley East. I am certain that this is not their choice obviously its the commute to and from work that is causing the majority of the traffic issues, something that cannot be avoided.

A few suggestions, and something I don't see happening in this city as it is and could remove alot of traffic jams are:

1 Developpement of a Carpool Location, where commuters can leave their car, and hop in with other motorist, to help by removing these vehicules in the city, Of course this is probably not going to work as we as a society in Sudbury have never really looked at these options unlike in the GTA where its part of their life and has been for so long it, to them it makes sense...

2 - Developping the much needed Barrydowne Extension, this is probably the most appropriate way to spend the much needed money for this project, not only will it help with traffic conjestion, it will also connect alot of the community to each other. New Sudbury residents won't care as much to travel to Valley East for some shopping bargains, where as now they avoid it due to the traffic, and obviously the price of gasoline.

So I support this to the full extent that I can possibly support this. I however do not support the Legacy project being offered by this city of building the stupid ugly looking building on Frood Road!!! Lets find a new legacy project...this should be it!!!

Hello Mr. Rivet

After going through hell when the Belanger Construction was
inefficiently in progress, and before I go on, let me tell you I'm not
in the business of bashing people, I'm simply calling a spade a spade. I
was ecstatic when they finally left because going to and from work was
really a nightmare. Not long after, the city in it's infinite wisdom,
decided that more construction was needed on route 80. I'm not sure what
it is that is needed so bad in this area that it takes precedent over
the Barrydowne extension program that was in the plans even before you
were born.

We got a letter from the city asking the general public to be patient
about this new project. Let me tell you that dealing with this city's
decision involves more that patience. The price of fuel is ridiculous,
people in the line-up are mean and ignorant, and all this extra
pollution is the last thing that this planet needs. I am looking really
hard for the common sense that was used when deciding to tackle this
project and to give it priority over the Barrydowne extension. I'm sorry
to say that I've been losing confidence in the authorities of the city
to make wise and effective decisions.

Let me guess... the Barrydowne extension is too expensive? If that's
the logic behind all this, again I'm sorry to say that too is a
reflection of bad management because our property taxes are also through
the roof and very high. Sometimes I get so frustrated with the stupidity
I feel like we should be allowed to send an invoice for all the extra
money these bad decisions are costing us.

I really hope that the Barrydowne extension will be started very soon
because Route 80 is just simply overwhelmed with traffic and in today's
society this is nothing but a dangerous situation just waiting for
someone to get seriously hurt. Didn't it make sense to anyone at City
Hall that if they wanted to improve traffic flow that they should FIRST
do the extension where the traffic could've been redirected; then work
on Route 80? I really don't get the logic here.

Did you consider having the construction stop between 3-6pm. They don't
work night shift, and they don't work weekends. Are we making on purpose
to upset people and have them working at the same time as rush hour.
Something needs to be done about the traffic flow and something needs to
be done now! OH and please once this project is done, can we have a
break from construction for at least a few years.... I getting very sick
of this 25 minute drive turning into 45-50 minute drive.

thank you

Ben B.

It's about time,l ong over due. I live in McCrea Hights,we have allot of trouble pulling out in the morning, kids waiting for the bus, are in danger, the bypass would certainly take away the heavy flow of traffic."This could save a life"Lets go for it,I strongly support the bypass!!

Friday Lasalle was backed up to the shopping center again and it was only about 3:30 whats up with that,Why can we put an extra turning lane heading to the valley right now!!!It does'nt make sense at all..

The traffic congestion on Municipal Road 80 (Hwy 69 North) is only going to get worse as more and more new houses are built. Please act now to ensure that all of Greater Sudbury continues to grow and prosper.

Chris Hamblin
Hanmer, Ontario

I have wanted this project to happen since Highway 69N was widened to 4 lanes (how many years ago?), and if any of the councillors of the time had had any vision, we wouldn't be having these problems now!!!
Yours sincerely,

Their are only two routes from the Valley and Capreol to the city, my daughter goes to Cambrian and I need to go to the airport, radar road was so bad this year we had to drive on the shoulder until they took the top level off, my cars have received damaged caused by road conditions, fix the existing routes to the Valley and Caperol and develop the Barrydowne extension to take pressure off the other two routes this will help the out skirts grow if we have decent roads.

Fred Lowes

Dear Council Members;
The Barrydowne extension has in my opinion become a priority for the City of Greater Sudbury. Hanmer is the fastest growing community in the CGS and a significant proportion of the CGS population live in the Valley and surrounding area. Expanding the former highway 69 through McCrea heights will not alleviate the congestion and bottleneck at Lasalle and Notre Dame.

Increased mining activities in the north east segment of the Sudbury basin has caused traffic to significantly increase in the Hanmer Capreol area in recent years. The community of Capreol in particular will greatly benefit since it has become primarily a bedroom community for the CGS. Capreol has a lot to offer but has not grown due to the time required to travel to Sudbury and due to higher gas prices. The Barrydowne extension therefore appears to be the best solution to address these issues. I do not believe that expropriating numerous houses and businesses along the former highway 69 is the most cost effective answer, nor will it alleviate the congestion at Lasalle.

Thank you for considering this option and if there is any way I can help please let me know.

Dear Council Member,
You must be aware of the rapid growth of population here in Valley East. It is wonderful how businesses are being built here to bring the necessary services to the people. Because of this, there is a great amount of traffic on Municipal Road 80 or Hwy 69 N. It is creating a lot of problems especially, the bottleneck effect on the corner of Notre Dame and LaSalle. When there are accidents or construction, it is very inconvenient for people to go all the way around to get to town. It is imperative that the Barrydowne extension becomes your priority. We desperately need another route to come into town. It would be safer for the people of greater Sudbury if there would be an alternate road. It is high time this road becomes a reality. Can I count on you to support this project?
Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,

Val Caron,

Because of the rapid growth of the northern part of the City of Greater Sudbury, Municipal Road 80 (Hwy 69 North) is at capacity. When it is congested (most rush hours), emergency vehicles cannot get through, and precious gasoline is wasted as cars unnecessarily idle. The time for the Barrydowne Extension project is now! As users of this route can attest, the City desperately needs this alternate access route as soon as possible. So I ask that you place this route as a priority project. By the time it gets built, traffic congestion and problems on MR80 and Radar Road will already be intolerable.
Over 15 years ago, when I was a professor in the Civil Engineering Technology program at Cambrian College, the graduating classes in their Civil Projects course already recognized the need for this route and prepared preliminary construction and design proposals as part of their course requirements. Now council needs to see the future and quickly adopt measures to solve this ongoing and increasingly serious problem.
Yours sincerely,

THIS PROJECT IS LONG OVERDUE! AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO THE VALLEY AREA AS FIRST DEEMED NECESSARY AS LONG AGO AS 1976.

Now, due to the rapid growth of the City of Greater Sudbury, Municipal Road 80 (Hwy 69 North) is at capacity. The time for the Barrydowne Extension project is now!

DO NOT DELAY ANY LONGER. ALL VALLEY RESIDENTS RISK THEIR LIVES AND THOSE OF THEIR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN EVERY DAY AS THEY TRAVEL TO AND FROM SUDBURY. The City desperately needs this alternate access and I ask for your support in making this a reality. Can I count on your support? Yours sincerely,

Hello Andre: When I wrote my endorsement to the much needed extension,I expected you to use it in any manner that would be helpful to the project. I signed it in the hopes that others will also step forward.
In the late 1970's, several of us started the Valley East Business Association. At that time, we were trying to get approval for the Val Est Mall, the Valley East Industrial Park improvements and - guess what - improved transportation routes, including four laning of Hwy 69 N, busses to Sudbury, an expansion to recreational facilities - now the Howard Armstrong Centre - and yes, an alternate transportation route. Every time I am out and about, I am so happy to see how the valley has grown, and how our nay-sayers' arguments against these modernizations have been completely dispelled. Both Hanmer and Val Caron have grown and prospered equally; a by-pass will not mean that no one will shop in the Val Caron or Hanmer stores. To the contrary, it will get tired people home faster so they can shop here where they get friendly, individual service at
a location which is convenient to their homes. It might even bring those city folks out here to enjoy our good service. The Valley East Industrial Park has grown beyond our expectations, the Val Est Mall is doing great, and the Howard Armstrong Centre is busy all the time...and we have definitely outgrown the 4 lanes into Sudbury.
The proposed housing growth is reason enough to start this new route immediately.
Many times in my long life I have lived through the wonderful experience of
seeing how dreams can become realities when a few determined, good-hearted people get together with a common goal. This new route to the valley is such a goal. I applaud you in your efforts. I'll be watching your progress.
Sincerely,
Barbara Lindsay

The wait time to get into the city in the morning is 20 minutes. That is really way too long. The time for the Barrydowne Extension project is now!
I have resided on Elm Street for almost 22 years & worked at the data centre. With accidents/construction, etc. on Highway 69 north, my access to home was impeded & on many occasions, I had to detour through Garson. I feel this is a great move on the part of the city.
Yours sincerely,

I have been travelling MR80 since the age of 18 to get to work. That̓s now 28 years experience, so I have seen the daily congestion of traffic over the years. It̓s getting worse every second. It is time to do something about it. Our City wants to improve /expand but aren̓t willing to provide the people with the commute that is required from the Valley. ?? I ̔d like to thank Councillor Rivest for his determination and his hard work in trying to make this project a reality for the people of the City of Greater Sudbury and outlining areas. KUDO̓s to you Sir. I hope you and the rest of us that are behind you succeed in achieving this most important goal. Please give the thumbs up for the
Barrydowne Extension.
L. Haert
With assistance from Federal and Provincial grants this should be achievable.

Hi There
I am a 16 year old student living on Bodson Drive. I really like
the idea of having Barrydowne extension come through beside my house.
First off, it would be easier for us around here to get to town, work, etc.
Also, the idea of having a bus could prevent the commotion on the Valley bus & help others in need of one as well. With today's gas prices, NO ONE can afford to wait to get through the set of lights twice a day for 20-30 minutes every time to go to, or back from work. It's crazy! There will be 3 ways to get to Sudbury and shouldn't have a reason to have long waits, line ups from Val Caron to Val Therese,
and accidents could decrease. To add, the Valley's population is increasing.
My family and I think this project should start WAY sooner, than later.
Thank you.
Meaghen Bishop
I Live in Capreol and this would be very beneficial to myself. I was
currently thinking about moving out of the sudbury area because renting
apartments are so hard to come by and the commute to Sudbury and back is
too long. If this took place i would substantially consider staying.

This project is a must to releve the amount of traffic going threw the
mcrea hieghts and radar road for safety reason(accidents and emergency
services). Plain and simple its too congested.A multi complex centre and
arts centre should not be of top prioritey ,how do you want tourism to
come here when they can't get here because of the roads.....roads must
done this extention is the perfect sollution to all our headaches it
will give hope to the citizen of our city that all road will aventually
get be good to drive a car without the FEAR of parts falling of your
car...(happened to me)...so in my finishing statement i wish for you to
dearly consider this barry down extention project..Yours sincerely,

Steph rivers

Please consider the Barrydowne Extension as soon as possible, it takes me approximately 40-55 minutes every morning to get to work. That is if there is no accident, if there is an accident, you can probably add on another 20-30 minutes.

Hellen Coussacus

I have personally spoken with the Greater Sudbury's roads department on many occasions and they say it's too much money. Well, what's more important spending a little bit of cash to make more or not spending any money and losing tons more? The risk is yours. What do you want?

More people coming to live in Sudbury and Valley East because it's a desirable place to live with many things to do and see or thousands of people leaving because the roads are crap, hardly anything is open past 9pm during the week and 5pm on weekends, unless you want to drink or gamble, it takes 30 to 45 minutes to get to work/school and then the ride back home everyday is even more atrotous, and the pollution from the smoke stack is slowly killing everyone around us. I think the choice is clear.

If you wait until 2021 for this project it will be too late. Our population will dissipate and this "Greater" City of Sudbury will just be one giant hole in Ontario that no one has ever heard of.

I enjoy living here and I want this to be a place people want to visit and come to live but the way it is right now no one wants to stay, not even the University and college students stay because there is nothing to do. They go home where they can get jobs and do many exciting things they can't do here. This project has been a discussion topic for far too many years, it's time to make it a reality!

Sincerely,

Kristi

Radar Road through Garson is not a viable alternative for the majority of commuters in the Valley. It adds the best part of 10-18km and approx 25 minutes travel time to a trip, a situation that is truly unacceptable, except in Emergencies of road closures, to their travel. Not to mention the road is atrocious also.

Dennis McLeod

I came across a group on facebook, through my friends that still reside in The Great City of Sudbury (Valley area). I totally understand what they are going through every morning trying to get to Cambrian College.

I myself am a Cambrian Allumini and know what it is like when you are trying to make ends meet as a student and have the added stress of getting to class on time by taking two busses. I know longer reside in Sudbury, however I definitely think that this extension would be a fabulous idea for all of those people going to Cambrian as well that work in Sudbury. I have often wondered why every year Lasalle is under construction for the road. Later as an adult realized that all the traffic coming from the outlining areas make this over populated road a mess. This extension would not only lessen the traffic, fuel emissions, but also costs of construction on an overly used road. I think in the long run this would be cost beneficial for all people of the area. I know when I go and visit family and friends I would certainly use that extension as an easier way to get to the valley.

Dear Council Member, due to the rapid growth of the City of Greater Sudbury,
Municipal Road 80 (Hwy 69 North) is at capacity. The time for the Barrydowne
Extension project is now! The City desperately needs this alternate access and I ask
for your support in making this a reality. Can I count on your support? Yours
sincerely,

Thank you Councillor Rivest for taking on this project. The people of the Valley will remember.

I want to add what I feel are a few more important points to this issue:

Better access to Post Secondary Education - Cambrian
1) Please think of the young people of Valley & Capreol. Do you have any idea what
these kids go through to get to Cambrian College for 8:00 a.m. classes? From Capreol they take the 6:40 a.m. bus to get to the City core and use a transfer at the downtown depot to get on the Barrydowne bus that brings them to the door. If they choose not to travel so far or to be on the bus that long they can exit the Valley bus around the Lasalle/Notre Dame area and walk over to a bus stop and wait for the Lasalle bus - exit around the Beer Store on Lasalle & walk across using back streets & path past Lasalle Secondary School up the back way to Cambrian College but are late for class.

So both options mean 2 buses - one keeps you on buses a long time but brings you to
the door just in time for 8:00 a.m. classes, the other option still has you on bus almost as long but you have to walk in from Lasalle & you arrive just late for class.

What time do you think a student that has a late afternoon class - ends around 5:00
p.m. gets home? I don't know if the bus schedule has changed but when my daughter
went to Cambrian her first year (4 yrs ago) she had one day per week where here
classes ended around 5:00 and because of bus schedules got home to Capreol around
8:00 p.m. & the poor girl left at 6:40 that morning. Of course there are those who
will say "the parents should drive them to school". Well we did when we could but
keep in mind that as residents of Capreol and both parents working in Sudbury south,
we travel this congested route each day and have spent lots of time in traffic which
meant we could not accomodate everyone's schedules.

2) Physical Connections = Emotional Connections
With so many people still feeling disconnected and on the "outs looking in" to the new City of Greater Sudbury use this physical connection to improve on these feelings by your citizens in the outlining areas. If we were more physically connected we would feel more emotionally connected as well. It would help to bridge the culture gap that exists still.

Concerned Capreol Resident

T.Riochale
Dear Council Members,
I believe the time is now to focus on the Barrydown Extension project. Valley East keeps increasing in size and the main routes for all of this traffic (Mucipal Road 80, Radar Road) are too crowded during the morning and afternoon rush hours, not to mention the city roads leading to these routes (LaSalle, Falconbridge, Notre-Dame) are packed as well. With all the new subdivisions being built in Valley East, we need to start thinking about the increased traffic now.

We all know that this road will not be built overnight and therefore, we can't wait 5-10 years before giving it the attention it deserves. Not only will this project help people get to work and home sooner, but it will help the environment as well.

Think of all the fuel that will be saved by not having these long lineups of cars idling. In this day and age where we are told to conserve and eliminate polution as much as possible, how can you sit by and ignore this project? The time to act is now and I strongly support the Barrydown extension project. I ask that you all start showing your support for this project that is greatly needed for our community.
Yours sincerely,
gil_le5
Hello There
I am a young guy from Hanmer and this is a great idea, the best idea that I have ever seen coming from our government. I need to travel to Sudbury every day for work and I can't afford the gas and sitting in traffic for 20 minutes going to work and 20 minutes or longer coming home from work. Not to mention the pollution and gas emissions that my vehicle is creating. I know that the government is telling us to cut down on pollution and gas emissions but I truly believe that they are lying to me because this project would have been done long ago. We are talking about a straight line going from Barrydowne to NotreDame in Hanmer. What is the big deal? Show me what Sudbury can do with my tax dollars that I am now contributing to society. This will not only benefit me and my family but all of Valley East. This would add at least 40 minutes or more per day with my family. I could finally have supper with my parents and not eat alone.
WAY TO GO ANDRE!!!!!!!!
Thanks for everything
Jamie Gills (19 years old from Hanmer)
